Governor Charlie Baker today announced additional funding for the state’s program to help cities and towns with climate change preparedness. The Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness grant program (MVP) provides support for cities and towns in Massachusetts to begin the process of planning for climate change resiliency and implementing priority projects. The state awards communities with funding to complete vulnerability assessments and develop action-oriented resiliency plans.

Baker said the Commonwealth began the program when it was apparent something needed to be done sooner rather than later.

“Frankly, we saw the writing on the wall”, said Baker. “In our conversations with our colleagues in local government, and our conversations with folks in the climate and atmospheric community, it was crystal clear to us that it was important for states to step up and help cities and towns make the investments they needed to make to create more resilient communities from one end of Massachusetts to the other.”

89% of Massachusetts communities are part of the program. The next round of funding is scheduled for next spring.
