GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The City of Greenfield is working with the Department of Revenue to resolve bookkeeping errors that are preventing the state from certifying the city’s free cash and retained earnings, according to Finance Director Stephen Nembirkow.
Before any further financial orders for capital expenses can be approved, an audit must be completed, which may take several months.
Officials say the errors may involve millions of dollars, but there is no indication money was stolen. The review could continue into the fall.
Several councilors expressed frustration about the situation, particularly that they were not informed of the details until it was clear that certification was not going to happen in the usual timeframe.
The council is calling on Mayor Ginny Desorgher and Nembirkow to provide monthly updates on the audit until it has been completed.
